Mark Young has done an extraordinary job with the new Otoliths. The journal seems to be going from strength to strength. Everything is layered and intriguing in this, with particularly interesting work, for me, in Spencer Selby's often achingly beautiful vizpo (of which, left), poems by Jordan Stempleman, Tom Beckett (fantastic variation-poem as successful as Bernstein's war examplar at the close of Girly Man), MTC Cronin, Nick Piombino, an extension of Apollinaire into pure gesture with Thomas Fink, Eileen Tabios' ridiculously poignant, yet still understated, lyric gift:Girl singing. Day.
It occurs to me
I have loved well despite fire
burning the white gown
mother once knelt to hem
And Craig Perez' deliberately faux, self-aware, wilfully contorted translations: translation as cultural appraisal, as aesthetico-historical coming-to-terms.
